About DEVPAC.RTF / DEVPAC.PDF

(This text is included in the ZIP file, so you don’t need to save this page.)

Thanks to Nele Abels-Ludwig for what must have been hours of hard work typing-in the original manual (which was printed in draft mode on a 9-pin dot-matrix printer — remember those? — and thus impossible to OCR).  Without that text version to use as the base document, I could never even have started producing this formatted version.

DEVPAC.RTF may be freely distributed (but electronic distribution may only be in the form of the original, unaltered DEVRTF.ZIP or DEVPAC.PDF respectively), but the credits to both Nele and myself (Robert J. Baker) must remain intact.

To edit or print this document, a proper (RTF-capable of course) word-processor is needed — WordPad (supplied with Windows 9x) isn’t up to the job as it only implements a very basic subset of RTF.  Alternatively, try using Microsoft Word Viewer (on the Win9x CD) to view, and possibly print, this document as intended.  Or use the PDF version if you only want to view the document, not print it.

This document is laid out as A4 (210x297mm), but should not take too much work to convert to US Letter, or whatever size is desired, because I didn’t just load the text version and use AutoFormat — I also converted the hard-wired line numbers in the Table of Contents to proper cross-references.  (And I did a lot of other manual formatting.)

The fonts used are:

  • Arial Black (the first title)
  • Arial (other titles and headings)
  • Times New Roman (body text, proportional)
  • Andale Mono (body text, monospaced)
  • Symbol (the ENTER symbol)
  • Webdings (the SPACE symbol (small triangle))
  • If you lack all or some of these fonts, and your operating system or word-processor supports TrueType (I believe this is true of WordPerfect 6·0 for DOS, WindowsPC, MacOS, and possibly of BeOS and of WindowsX), you may obtain Arial, Arial Black, Andale Mono, Times New Roman, Webdings and about half-a-dozen others by visiting http://www.microsoft. com/typography/.  It’s worth doing so in any case, as Arial etc. contain far more characters than the standard Windows versions.  (Note, however, that to use the extra characters you will need a sophisticated program such as Word, and you may also need multilanguage support (from the Win9x CD) or Euro support (downloadable) installed.)

If you can’t (or don’t want to) get Andale Mono, substitute Courier New (be warned, however, that this typeface in my opinion is not suitable for this type of document as it does not visually distinguish between letter O and digit 0, as Andale Mono does).  If you can’t get Arial Black, use standard Arial (or Helvetica), and embolden it.
